Southern VT BKL Races 2008: schedule has been updated on 2/22

Fri Feb 22: Viking, Classic, night race, 5:00PM (changed 1/3)

BKL Festival: I
t's not too early to think about the BKL Festival. Here's the lodging info. Lorraine Cline (the 2008 Festival Chair) has secured 200 rooms for the 2008 BKL Festival, being held at the Gunstock Nordic Center in Gilford, NH on Feb. 29 - March 2.  120 rooms are at the Margate Resort, the Festival's Official Resort (hosting the Turkey Banquet, that's right...not pasta, and festival HQ), and 80 rooms will be available at the Landmark Inn (nearby sister resort, 1/2 the price). We're suggesting that you book a room at the Margate : 1-800-627-4283 ($99 - $119 room/night), since it's close to the off-snow action. Margate can give you Landmark's Tel.#  ($60 - $70room/night).  Those staying at the Landmark will have pool privileges at the Margate as both hotels have the same family ownership.  Make sure to mention NENSA in making the reservation so that you receive the above rates. There are other resorts nearby, so as long as you don't wait until the last minute, finding lodging elsewhere should not be a problem.
Schedule
Sat Mar 1: Skate Individual
Sun Mar 2: Classic Relays

West River Nordic Program

Our goal is to encourage as many young skiers and their families as possible to enjoy the activity of cross country skiing. We have some exciting changes to our program. First, all skiers who sign up will receive a youth trail pass to both Wild Wings & Viking touring Centers. This pass will allow skiers to ski at these areas not just at practices, but anytime they wish. Second, our club has purchased some new equipment which we will make available to skiers who would like to try the sport, before buying equipment. We also encourage parents to ski with the groups to make it a family activity.

As part of our educational focus, parents and skiers will be instructed in waxing technique. The program leaders will give advice on waxing, but the responsibility for having properly prepared skis will rest with the skiers and parents. Skiers in all age groups will be exposed to both the fundamentals of skiing, and the current skiing techniques. The ages listed below are the minimum; older skiers may also participate in the 1 or 2-day programs.

Striders: This program is skiers born in 2002 or earlier. An introduction to classical skiing. This group will meet on Friday at Wild Wings X-C Center from 3:15 – 4:30.  Cost: $75.00*

Gliders: This program is skiers born in 2000 or earlier. Skiers will be exposed to both ski techniques – classic and skate. This group will meet on Mondays (skating) at Viking XC Center from 3:15 – 4:30 and Fridays (classic) at Wild Wings X-C Center from 3:15 – 4:30. Cost: $105.00*

Fliers: This program is skiers born in 1998 or earlier.  This group will meet on Mondays (skating) at Viking XC Center from 3:15 – 4:30, and Wednesdays (classic) at Wild Wings X-C Center, or a skating location, from 3:15 – 4:30 and Fridays (classic) at Wild Wings X-C Center from 3:15 – 4:30 Cost: $150.00*

* All these fees include membership in the New England Nordic Ski Association (NENSA) *

* All fees include a WRNS youth Trail Pass to both Wild Wings and Viking. *

The skiers will be grouped according by birth year, with the ability to ski down an age level to be with school classmates.

Equipment

As well as skis, boots, and poles; each family will need a basic wax kit. The suggested contents of which will be provided at registration. Some families may have used equipment for sale, if you do – please bring what you have available to registration, where you’ll be able to see if anyone wants to buy it.

Race Age Classes

Skiers in any of the programs are welcome to enter races. All age groups for racing are determined by year of birth, as follows:
